In this guide I share the best things to do in San Cristobal Island Galapagos, from hiking to see marine wildlife along the trails, watching playful animals on Playa Mann beach or swimming with sharks on an epic Kicker Rock tour.
I skipped the luxury cruises and stayed in an Airbnb for 4 nights to explore this incredible island on my own time. Whether you want to try Cerro Tijeretas snorkelling to find spotted eagle rays or watch a live sea lion birth these tips from my own experience will help you plan your trip with absolute confidence.

5 Top Things to do in San Cristobal Island: Galapagos 2026 Guide
1. Swim with Rays and Sharks on a Kicker Rock Tour
We woke up early for what turned out to be our absolute favourite boat excursion of the entire trip! The famous Kicker Rock tour! You depart from the main town pier at 7:30am and you will head straight to Kicker Rock as your first stop. This was easily the best tour we did out of all the islands purely just for the amount of wildlife packed into this one spot.
We swam for around 1.5 hours and the marine life was unmatched. I saw so many spotted eagle rays just gliding through the water right around us, which has always been a massive dream of mine to see in real life! We also saw the most colourful coral reefs with colourful tropical fish, about 6 turtles in the space of 10 seconds and reef sharks. I honestly could have stayed in the water here all day.
After our morning swim the boat headed over to a private secluded bay where we could safely snorkel and explore again. The area featured a stunning deserted beach where we went to relax and walk along the white sand. We chilled on the shore and collected some really cool seashells (but always remember to leave them behind and never take them off the islands!) There were even a few wild sea lions just chilling on the beach right next to us.
On the drive to the next snorkelling spot the crew let us try our hand at a bit of deep sea fishing, but we were not having much luck catching anything. We did get incredibly lucky though because a pod of wild dolphins suddenly appeared near us! They were moving far too quick for us to jump in and swim with them but it always completely amazes me whenever I see them jumping right out of the water.
We then finally got to the final shallow swimming spot among the mangroves where we had to do a short coastal walk to reach the entry point. We saw even more marine wildlife before finally packing up our gear for the journey back to town.
Pro Tip: This tour sells out quickly. On the other islands we managed to always secure a tour for the next day but we did not have this luck with San Cristobal, so make sure you book this well in advance.
2. Watch Wild Animals at Playa Loberia
We decided to walk out to Playa Loberia, which translates directly to Sea Lion Beach. It takes about 40 minutes to walk to the beach from the town centre. We were heading out to meet some friends that we had previously met at the Secret Garden hostel in Cotopaxi on the mainland!
This beach was absolutely insane. There were so many sea lions sleeping on the sand, but there were also dozens of highly active ones playing right alongside humans in the shallow sea (yes sea lions also get the zoomies lol). The absolute highlight of our entire Galapagos trip happened right in front of our eyes on this beach. We actually watched a mummy sea lion give birth right in the middle of the volcanic rocks! Yes, I legit did get incredibly emotional watching it happen.
Pro Tip: On our way out of town, we made sure to stop at the local supermarket to pick up some food and drinks. There is absolutely nothing around the beach area, so you must make sure to bring enough food and water for however long you want to spend there.
3. Scramble along the Punta Carola Trail
If you are standing in town on the beachfront facing the sea, you can walk to the right to find the coastal trails. First, you will hit Playa Mann beach which is not very far at all and is packed with sea lions resting on the sand. We kept walking past it towards the more rugged coastline to find the paths leading out to Punta Carola.
It is such a cool trail because you get to see hundreds of marine iguanas and sea lions playing in the waves right around the cliffs. At the end of the sandy bay you will reach the iconic red and white navigation lighthouse standing right on the rocky point. It is the ultimate spot to sit on the rocks and watch the sunset over the ocean
Pro Tip: I recommend wearing proper trainers for this next section because the path turns into volcanic rocks and dirt tracks where you have to scramble.
4. Relax and Spot Sea Lions at Playa Mann Beach
Playa Mann beach is located incredibly close to the town waterfront and it is packed with dozens of sea lions sunbathing on the sand and swimming in the sea.
It is the best spot to chill for a few hours to soak up the sun but be must careful because the wildlife totally rules the area. I actually got chased right off my beach towel by an angry sea lion who wanted to sunbathe on it (lol).
If you want some cool pics for Instagram without the crowds in the background come back at sunrise. You will get the entire beach completely to yourself, the lighting is perfect and all the sea lions are on the beach sleeping so you get 100s in your photo at once!
5. Experience Free Cerro Tijeretas Snorkelling
If you follow the coastal trails past the rocky bays you will reach the famous cove for Cerro Tijeretas snorkelling. This is an absolute must do activity on San Cristobal because it is completely free and offers some of the best marine life viewing from the shore. You can walk down the stone steps directly into the clear turquoise bay to swim.
The underwater wildlife here is incredible and I saw large sea turtles grazing on the algae, schools of colourful tropical fish and massive spotted eagle rays gliding right beneath me. Playful sea lions also love to swim right around you in the deeper parts of the channel. It makes a fantastic budget day out because you do not need to pay for an official boat tour to experience the Galapagos wildlife.
