My Honest Truth About the Real Galapagos Trip Cost#

PLEASE NOTE: To keep this guide entirely accurate, I have converted all our real expenses into USD from GBP. All costs are in USD and are for 2 people.

1. Costs Before Arriving (Flights, Entry Fees and Cards)#

Visiting this wildlife paradise while maintaining a strict budget for the visiting the Galapagos is completely possible, but you need to account for the heavy entry costs before you even step foot on the islands. You cannot fly directly to the Galapagos from overseas, so you must factor in the cost of mainland connections and mandatory government fees.

Because flights out to the islands depart incredibly early in the morning, we chose to stay 1 night at Hostal Alpachaca near the airport to make the journey completely stress free. We booked our flights last minute (roughly 1.5 weeks before we flew) which definitely inflated our Galapagos trip cost. Below is exactly what we spent before arriving:

  • Quito Airport Transit Hotel: USD $28 for 1 night at Hostal Alpachaca
  • Flights to Santa Cruz: USD $865 (USD $432.50 per person) last minute tickets from the mainland
  • Departure Flights to Cuenca: USD $152 (USD $76 per person) for tickets to fly off the islands to Cuenca
  • Galapagos Transit Control Card: USD $40 (USD $20 per person) for the TCC (do this form online to save time at the airport)
  • National Park Entrance Fee: USD $400 (USD $200 per person) paid in cash at immigration when you land
  • Airport Ferry and Bus: USD $26 (USD $13 per person) for our public buses and ferry to reach mainland Santa Cruz

A golden sunset glowing over the ocean harbour filled with anchored local tour boats and water taxis near the main pier.

2. Santa Cruz Budget Breakdown (Accommodation, Food and Activities)#

Below is my complete breakdown of food, tours and activities on the island. My biggest tip is to try and eat dinner at restaurants that offer menu del dia (menu of the day) because this is a 3 course meal with a drink for around USD $10 per person. We tried to have breakfast and lunch using food from the supermarkets to save money.

Pro Tip: Buying a snorkel set on the islands is an absolute budget killer. We had to pay USD $55 for 1 single snorkel because we did not pack one from home! Do yourself a massive favour and buy your snorkeling gear before you arrive in the Galapagos

  • La Peregrina Galapagos B&B Hotel (Private Room) – USD $156 for 3 nights
  • Total Food and Drinks Spend: USD $145.75 for both our supermarket shops, restaurant menu of the days, ice cream treats, sunset pier drinks (bought cheap from the supermarket), transit day meals and daily snacks (like chocolate or crisps)
  • Snorkel & Mask: USD $55 for 1 single snorkel at a local shop (we had one already that another backpacker in Quito gave us for free!)
  • All Day Pinzon Island Boat Tour: USD $280 (USD $140 per person) (Includes full lunch, snacks, drinks and photos)
  • Las Grietas National Park Entry Tickets: USD $24 (USD $12 per person) for our guided entry time slots
  • Water Taxi Transfers to Las Grietas: USD $4 (USD $2 per person) for our round trip boat trips
  • Charles Darwin Research Centre Tour: USD $20 (USD $10 per person) for our tour and guide
  • Tortuga Bay Trail Registration and Entry Fee: USD $20 (USD $10 per person) paid at the national park ranger booth before starting the walk
  • Tortuga Bay Kayak Rental: USD $25 for a double kayak

3. Isabela Island Budget Breakdown (Accommodation, Food and Activities)#

Isabela Island is a quiet paradise compared to Santa Cruz but the food costs are slightly higher because everything has to be shipped in by boat. To help you lock in your Galapagos backpacker budget, here is the exact cost breakdown for our 3 full nights exploring this island.

  • Private Hostel Room at La Casa de Mike: USD $144.40 total for 3 nights
  • Mandatory Island Entry Port Tax: USD $20 (USD $10 per person). This is mandatory cash paid on arrival.
  • Local Truck Taxi: USD $5 to drive us from the pier to our hostel because I was feeling sea sick
  • Total Food and Drinks Spend: USD $149.30 for both of us for all our restaurant meals, supermarket snacks, sweet ice cream treats, bottles of water and our delicious lobster dinners (on a menu of the day!) around the main square
  • Professional Laundry Service: USD $12 to wash our clothes
  • Los Tuneles Premium Boat Tour: USD $240 (USD $120 per person)
  • Las Tintoreras Budget Boat Tour: USD $100 (USD $50 per person)
  • Local Tour Water Taxi Shuttles: USD $8 (USD $4 per person). We had to pay USD $1 per person each way to reach our tour boats for both the Las Tintoreras and Los Tuneles excursions)
  • Wall of Tears National Park Trail Entry: USD $0 (This historic independent trail is completely FREE to visit!)
  • Full Day Bicycle Rentals for Wall of Tears (you can walk this for FREE): USD $20 (USD $10 per person)
  • Speedboat Water Taxis: USD $4 (USD $2 per person) to cover our arrival and departure transfers from the main passenger pier

My Top Budget Takeaways for Isabela Island

Isabela Island is definitely more expensive for dining out compared to Santa Cruz, but you can still find incredible value if you look around. The standard menu del dia deals here hover around USD $12 to USD $14 per person but the quality is amazing. I even managed to get half a lobster dinner wrapped inside a cheap 3 course meal package right on the main square! For lunch, I highly recommend going to Sun & Coffee every single day because their food changes daily and their prices are totally unbeatable.

When it comes to paid excursions, your Galapagos land based budget will face a big choice between the two main tours. The Las Tintoreras trip is a fantastic budget option at USD $50 per person but if you can only afford one paid activity I would choose the Los Tuneles tour for USD $120 per person. It is a bit of a splurge but it is completely worth the extra money.

We saw the exact same marine life as the first trip but got the added bonuses of viewing wild sea horses up close and walking right next to the blue footed boobies. What is the point of coming all the way to the Galapagos if you miss out on seeing a blue footed booby?

4. San Cristobal Budget Breakdown (Accommodation, Food and Activities)#

Finishing your journey on San Cristobal Island is an absolute dream for wildlife lovers because the town is completely overrun with sea lions (you will see them crossing roads and sunbathing outside cafes). Also, it is the easiest airport to leave from because you can walk there which makes checkout day completely stress free. To help you complete your Galapagos land based budget, here is the exact cost breakdown for our final 4 nights spent on this island:

  • Kicker Rock Full Day 360 Tour: USD $320 (USD $160 per person). Includes full lunch, snacks, drinks and equipment
  • Airbnb Apartment: USD $165.15 total for our 4 night stay
  • Total Food and Drinks Spend: USD $211.85 for both of us for all our supermarket snacks, local beach beers, independent bakery treats, our cheap daily menu of the day dinners, our celebratory final night restaurant dinner and our very last checkout morning breakfast in town before heading to the airport
  • Water Taxi Shuttles: USD $6 (USD $3 per person). This breaks down to USD $1 per person each way and you have to take these from your speedboat transfer when you arrive as well as each way to get to your boat for your tour
  • Playa Loberia and Playa Mann Beach Access: USD $0 (Both of these incredible sea lion beaches are completely Free to visit on your own!)

My Top Budget Takeaways for San Cristobal

San Cristobal is an incredible place for finding cheap things to do in Galapagos because you can walk to massive wildlife colonies completely for FREE. We spent our first full afternoon walking out to Playa Loberia to view a mum sea lion giving birth on the beach and spent our final morning at Playa Mann surrounded by sea lions (one even stole my towel lol). All without spending a single dollar on entry fees. Make sure to make the most of all the free beaches!

5. Inter Island Speedboat and Water Taxi Costs#

Moving between the different islands on a Galapagos land based budget requires using the public speedboats to get around. There are no direct public ferries connecting Isabela Island and San Cristobol , meaning absolutely every single route has to go through Santa Cruz. We booked all our transit tickets 1 week in advance through Ferry Galapagos to ensure our seats did not sell out. I do know a few people who got stuck as they did not book in advance and had to spend more time on islands than intended!

To keep your math completely accurate, you must remember that the ferry ticket price does not include the local water taxis. Because the large speedboats cannot pull directly up to the docks you have to pay a small cash fee of USD $1 per person each way to the tiny shuttle boats that take you to and from the speedboats from land.

Here is our exact inter island transportation cost breakdown for 2 people:

  • Santa Cruz to Isabela Island Speedboat Ferry: USD $70 (USD $35 per person)
  • Isabela Island back to Santa Cruz Speedboat Ferry: USD $70 (USD $35 per person for our early 6am morning transit connection)
  • Santa Cruz to San Cristobal Speedboat Ferry: USD $70 (USD $35 per person for our afternoon 3pm transit connection)
  • Inter Island Ferry Water Taxi Shuttles: USD $12 total for 2 people (We had to pay USD $1 per person each way for all 3 of our island transfers, covering 6 individual shuttle rides total)
  • Santa Cruz Municipal Pier Entry Tax: USD $4 total for 2 people (Santa Cruz charges a mandatory USD $1 per person fee every single time you use their main pier to board or exit a public ferry)

6. My Total Spent Complete Breakdown#

To help you visualise exactly where your money goes on a Galapagos land based budget, I have organised our complete 10 night travel expenses into a table. This comprehensive overview captures absolutely every single expense across the three main islands, our pre arrival logistics and our mainland transit points.

All figures listed below reflect the exact combined total expenses for 2 people traveling together:

7. My Top Tips to Save Even More Money (What I would change)#

We had an incredible experience but we definitely splurged on breakfast, impulse snack hauls, tours, private rooms and booking everything last minute. If I could completely redo our trip with a strict focus on a Galapagos backpacker budget, I would change a few things to keep our overall costs down even further.

By implementing these points, you can easily slash your total Galapagos trip cost and save at least USD $700 to USD $800 for 2 people which makes a massive difference! Here is exactly what I would change:

  • Book Hostel Dorm Beds Instead of Private Rooms: Choosing private rooms and Airbnbs across the islands was a luxury choice but it significantly increased our accommodation expenses. If you are fully committed to a strict budget you should book single beds in shared hostel dorm rooms instead. Standard hostel dorm beds on Santa Cruz, Isabela Island and San Cristobal average around USD $15 to USD $20 per night per person which will instantly cut your total accommodation costs completely in half.
  • Skip staying on Santa Cruz Completely: If I could do my trip again I would either skip Santa Cruz entirely or only stay 1 night. The wildlife opportunities and island atmospheres are so much better on Isabela Island and San Cristobal, especially as they have so many free amazing things to do. Because the inter island public speedboat network forces everyone to transit through Santa Cruz anyway you can easily use your 5.5 hour layover to complete the free walk out to Tortuga Bay and tour the Charles Darwin Research Centre without paying a to stay on the island. This not only saves you on accommodation but also all the extra food you would spend over your time here.
  • Limit Yourself to Just 1 Paid Day Tour on Isabela Island: Choosing between excursions is the the hardest things to do but also what will help you save so much money. While the Las Tintoreras boat trip is a fantastic budget option at USD $50 per person you should completely skip it if you plan to do the Los Tuneles tour for USD $120 per person. I saw the exact same marine life on the Los Tuneles but also got to see a wild sea horse and the blue footed boobies meaning paying for both excursions is an unnecessary extra cost.
  • Book in Advance: Booking your flights last minute is an absolute budget killer. We only booked our flights 1.5 weeks before we left which meant they were way more expensive than they should have been. Buying your tickets 3 to 4 months in advance will instantly save you roughly USD $100 to USD $150 per person on standard airlines like Avianca and LATAM.
  • Eat only at Menu of the Days or Supermarkets: Eating out at bakeries, treating ourselves to USD $18 breakfasts and buying imported snacks like chocolate and crisps added a so much more to our total spend. Commit entirely to eating local menu del dia packages for dinner, buy basic whole foods from the local supermarkets for breakfast and pack your own snacks from the mainland will save you so much money to spend elsewhere.
  • Bring your own Snorkel: Never buy a snorkel on the islands due to extreme markups. If you forget to pack a set from home buy one on mainland Ecuador before you arrive.
