Palomino, Colombia is a relaxed beach town on the Caribbean coast, known for its palm lined beaches, friendly atmosphere and easygoing lifestyle. With a mix of great food, chilled beach bars and a fun social scene, Palomino is the perfect place to slow down while still enjoying good vibes day and night. When it comes to things to do in Palomino, there is not a lot to do and that is exactly the appeal. After a busy Colombia itinerary filled with cities, tours and early starts, Palomino offers a welcome break where doing very little is the whole point.

Things to do in Palomino: A Guide to Colombia’s Chillest Beach Town

Palomino is a laid back beach village that is generally very safe for travelers. It has a relaxed, boho vibe and while violent crime is rare, you should still watch your belongings on the beach.

The biggest safety concern here is the ocean, as the riptides are incredibly strong. There are also no streetlights so just be careful where you step at night.

Most people skip staying in Santa Marta as it can feel a bit dodgy and unsafe, but it is the easiest transit point. From Minca, take the colectivo down to the city and head to the main market area. Instead of checking in anywhere, just hop straight onto the green bus heading toward Riohacha. It is a cheap, easy 2 hour ride that drops you right on the main road in Palomino where you can then walk down the side road towards the beach where you will find all accommodation.

The Dreamer Hostel is considered the top choice for first timers because the location is unbeatable. You can walk straight from your room onto the sand, making it perfect if you want to be in the center of the action. It is also right next to the beach parties that happen in the evenings, so you do not have to worry about walking long distances down dark paths late at night.

Because this hostel is so popular and sits right on the beach front, it has a great social energy that makes it easy to meet other travelers.

Many locals rent out surfboards and beach chairs or run small food stalls, so you can easily spend the entire day here without getting bored. Whether you are walking along the shore, grabbing a casual snack or soaking in the vibrant sunsets, Palomino beach is the ideal spot to enjoy life at your own pace. In the evenings, the beach transforms into a lively spot with casual beach parties and a DJ where locals and travellers gather to dance under the stars.

2. River Tubing in Palomino

One of the most popular things to do in Palomino is river tubing. This is a fun and relaxing way to experience the natural surroundings of the town. You can float down the gentle Palomino River on an inner tube while taking in the jungle on either side.

Local operators make it easy to rent tubes and arrange transport. If you are after a party experience, many hostels offer tipsy tubing, which combines the river float with a few drinks for a playful afternoon on the water. 

If you are short on time and want to book a tubing tour in advance, there are plenty of great companies offering this experience on Viator, so you can secure your spot before you arrive.

3. Day Trip to Tayrona National Park

If you want to experience one of the most famous natural spots in Colombia, a day trip to Tayrona National Park is very easy to do from Palomino.

The park is just a short drive away, making it possible to explore the jungle and wildlife without needing to spend the night. Many local tour operators and hostels offer organized day trips that include transport and guided walks. It is the perfect way to add a bit of adventure to your itinerary without needing extra days in the region.
