1. Visit the Getsemani Neighbourhood
Getsemani Cartagena was once a working class neighbourhood on the outskirts of the walled city, quieter and more residential than the historic centre. Over the years, it has transformed into one of Cartagena’s most creative and colourful districts. Today, its cobblestone streets are alive with vibrant murals, lively plazas and charming cafes spilling onto the sidewalks. As you wander through Getsemani, you can feel the neighbourhood’s past and present coming together, from the stories told in its street art, making it one of the most memorable things to do in Cartagena.

Pro Tip: You should head to this plaza in the evenings. It is the best place to grab a cheap beer from a corner shop and watch the street performers.
2. Boat trip to Rosario Islands
For a refreshing escape from the bustling streets of Cartagena, we booked this tour to the Rosario Islands with Viator. This small archipelago is made up of around 27 islands, each boasting powdery white sand, crystal clear turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs.
The islands feel like a slice of Caribbean paradise and are the perfect spot to breathe, unwind, and forget the city for a while. You can swim in the clear waters, snorkel among colourful marine life, or simply relax on the beaches and soak up the scenery. Unfortunately, we were unlucky and ended up sailing through tropical storms, so we did not get to experience the islands in their full sun glory. Even with this, the islands were still stunning, and we can only imagine how breathtaking they must be under the Caribbean sun.
3. Watch the Sunset from the City Walls
One of the most magical things to do in Cartagena is to watch the sunset from the city walls. As the golden light spills over the rooftops of the historic centre, the colonial buildings glow in shades of pink, orange and gold. Walking along the centuries old walls, you can take in panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea on one side and the bustling streets and plazas on the other. It is the perfect way to end the day and capture unforgettable photos, making it a truly iconic Cartagena experience.
4. Explore the Historic Centre
Wandering around the historic centre of Cartagena feels like stepping into another world. The whole area is wrapped by the centuries old city walls, which gives it such a charming, timeless vibe. You will spot colourful colonial buildings with balconies full of flowers, lively plazas where people are chatting or listening to music and the impressive cathedral right in the middle of it all.
The historic centre is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, which makes it feel even more special. Honestly, it almost feels a little like a European city, but with that unmistakable Caribbean energy. With its history and charm, it’s definitely one of the best things to do in Cartagena.
5. Castillo de San Felipe Fort
The Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is one of Cartagena’s most impressive landmarks. Built by the Spanish in 1657 to protect the city from attacks and invasions, this massive fortress sits on top of a hill overlooking Cartagena. It has a maze of tunnels that are fascinating, but there is so much history that I would definitely recommend going with a tour guide otherwise you will not discover any of the amazing stories behind the walls.
Try to go early in the morning, because Cartagena gets HOT fast. The fortress is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and the entry fee is around 25,000 COP for adults. Guided tours are available at the entrance or can be booked in advance.
6. Party on Cocktail Street
If you are looking for a fun night out in Cartagena, head to Cocktail Street in Getsemani for some of the best and cheapest drinks in the city. We found cocktails for just around 20,000 COP each, which is an absolute steal, especially since Cartagena can be pretty pricey.
Arrive around 10:30pm to start your pre drinks and stick around until 11 or 11:30, because someone usually walks by handing out free club entry vouchers. Make sure you grab one, as the rooftop bar you will end up at has the best views, amazing DJs, and dancers that make the night unforgettable.
Even on the street the atmosphere is buzzing, with people dancing in the streets and spilling out of the bars. Don’t miss the quirky hole-in-the-wall spot on Cocktail Street, where you can order a glass of wine to go, it makes you feel like you’re in Italy!
Pro tip: Start your night around 10:30 PM with a few pre drinks, grab those free club entry vouchers around 11, and then let the night unfold. Dancing in the streets, rooftop views, and amazing cocktails guaranteed!
Pro Tip: You should take the free entry voucher for the clubs when the staff members hand them out around 11pm. You must make sure to get to the club entrance by 11.40pm latest because you will likely have to queue and you might not make it to the front desk before midnight.
