The Best Things to Do in Bogota Colombia: A 3-Day Itinerary

1. Food Tour
One of my favourite things to do in Bogota is the Beyond Colombia Free Food Tour. If this is your first stop in Colombia, what better way to kick off the trip than by diving straight into the local food scene? It’s a FREE walking tour (you just pay for what you eat) through markets, restaurants, and street stalls where you’ll try everything from crispy empanadas to tender capybara (yes, those cute giant rodents!). Just bring some cash for the food and tip your guide at the end based on how much you enjoyed it. It’s a fun, easygoing way to taste Bogotá, meet locals, and get a delicious intro to Colombian culture.

2. Gold Museum (Visit the Museo del Oro)
The Museo del Oro is certainly one of the best things to do in Bogota Colombia. Inside, you’ll find thousands of pre Colombian gold pieces, from intricate jewelry to the famous Muisca raft that inspired the legend of El Dorado. Each artifact tells a story of Colombia’s indigenous cultures long before Europeans arrived, offering a rare look into their beliefs, rituals and way of life. Entry is cheap and even free on Sundays, making this a must visit cultural highlight while you explore the historic centre.
You can check the official Museo del Oro website for opening hours and ticket info
Pro Tip: Most museums in Bogota, including the Gold Museum, are closed on Mondays, so plan your itinerary accordingly!

3. Cerro Monserrate
For an unforgettable panoramic view of the capital, head up to Cerro Monserrate. It towers over the city at more than 3,000 meters above sea level. You can hike to the top if you’re feeling adventurous (it’s steep but safe) or take the funicular or cable car for an easier ride. At the top, you’ll find a church, restaurants, and the best views of Bogota that make the climb completely worth it. Go early or around sunset for the best light — and don’t forget a jacket, it gets chilly up there! If you’re planning your hike, check the official Cerro Monserrate site for transport and opening times.
Pro Tip: Bogota is high up! Take it slow on your first day, and if you’re hiking Monserrate, bring water and expect to get out of breath much faster than usual.

4. Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá
Just an hour outside Bogotá, the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is an incredible underground church carved into a salt mine. Inside, enormous chambers glow with blue light, and crosses are carved from salt. It’s still an active place of worship, making it feel both surreal and spiritual. The cathedral sits in a park with views over Zipaquirá, perfect for a half-day trip. Getting there by bus from Portal Norte is easy. Don’t forget your camera, it’s like nowhere else you’ve been.
Pro Tip: It is surprisingly chilly underground, so keep that jacket handy even if it’s sunny outside
5. Plaza Bolivar
Plaza Bolívar sits at the heart of Bogotá’s historic centre, a lively square surrounded by some of the city’s most important landmarks (the Cathedral, the Capitol, and the Palace of Justice). Today, it buzzes with life with the street vendors, pigeons, and locals meeting up after work. It’s the perfect spot to pause, people watch and soak in the atmosphere of La Candelaria. Swing by around sunset when the light hits the old buildings just right for some amazing views.

6. Street Art Tour
The local street art scene is impossible to miss and is widely considered a highlight of the city. The Beyond Colombia Free Graffiti Tour is the perfect way to explore it. You’ll see murals that tell tales of politics, history, and everyday life. Once risky to create, but now celebrated as part of the city’s culture. Your guide will share the stories behind the art, from myths to social commentary.
