After relaxing by the hotel pool all day, we thought it was about time to stop going to bed at 11pm like the young pensioners we are and experience a night out like a proper Thailand backpacker. If you’re planning a trip to Chiang Mai, you should definitely head over to the night market; the atmosphere is buzzing, the street food is second to none and the cocktails are not only cheap but delicious. Yes the market is touristy and you will hear more American and English accents than Thai, but who cares? You are guaranteed a great night, there’s a diverse crowd to mix with and who decided that if something is touristic you should avoid at all costs anyway?
The market is not just for those wanting to party, there’s also; tarot card reading, henna stalls, massage parlours, live performances, clothes shops and even a tattoo parlour (I was tempted, Joe wouldn’t let me). The night market is a great way to pass an evening, and if you don’t go overboard, it can be a seriously budget-friendly night at roughly 50 baht a main meal and 100 baht a cocktail, you really can’t go wrong.
If there’s a dish you MUST try, it’s the kanom krok. They’re strange little coconut, flour things which are doughy in the middle and have sweetcorn on the top. Sound disgusting, taste amazing!
